Chapter #2 of Real Food Nutrition & Health Study

We read our second chapter of Real Food Nutrition & Health Study.  It’s about Weston A. Price, a dentist.

Here are some of the questions that I answered:

In order to test his (Weston A. Price) hypothesis, why couldn’t he study modern societies? Who could he study?

Weston A. Price couldn’t study modern societies because they were all eating the industrialized foods that he hypothesized caused tooth decay and other dental diseases. Basically, 100% of all people in our modern society have tooth decay and other diseases, so he couldn’t find a big enough group of healthy people, in the modern society, to test out his hypothesis. He went to indigenous people.

Hunter-gatherers had no greater rate of tooth decay than 1%!

What 3 categories or types of tribal peoples did he study? Of those 3, which had the most tooth decay? Which had the least?

Weston A. Price studied Hunter-gatherers, Herdsmen and Agriculturalists. Hunter-gathers are indigenous people that hunt and gather the wild plants and animals around them. They had the least rates of tooth decay, which were less than 1%.

Herdsmen are the tribes that raise flocks of animals. They lived mostly on fresh milk and meat from pastured animals. They had a little more tooth decay than the Hunter-gathers. But only slightly more than the Hunter-gathers. Their tooth decay rates were still under 1%.

Agriculturalists have the highest rates of tooth decay, under 6%. This is still very low, if you compare their rates to our modern societies. Agriculturalists farm beans, sweet potatoes, bananas and cereal grains.

Did you read this chapter? What is your opinion on it?

  1. Mama says:

Hi, Naomi! I appreciated your summary of the 3 types of people Dr. Price studied. I am interested to learn why the agriculturalists had more tooth decay than the other groups, aren’t you? Perhaps we’ll learn more about that during this study.

  2. Abbie says:

Hi Naomi, how are you? My dad has an aunt who lives in Portland and she called yesterday and said that the weather is rainy out there. Our weather is starting to get cool but still beautiful.

Well, the first thing that stood out to me in chapter 2 was how much Weston A. Price must have cared about people’s health, and how he traveled to so many places just to test his hypothesis. Also, on page 18 it says that “obesity, diabetes, and heart disease can be completely reversed simply by returning these modernized native peoples to their traditional diets.” I find that amazing!

For my food journal…I need to eat more raw vegetables. :)

    • Naomi says:

Hi, Abbie! :D Our weather has been pretty rainy. The ducks are in heaven, with all the puddles around! 13 days ’till fall! :)

Good point! It was definitely worth it (for Weston A. Price, anyway. LOL) though! :)

 We got green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, apples, grapes, pears and a couple other fruits and vegetables. Our farmer’s market is still going. ;D YAY!
