Chapter #1 of Real Food Nutrition & Health Study

On Monday, we read our first lesson of Real Food Nutrition and Health Study. We all loved it. :)

Mom asked us a few questions, and here are my answers to a few of them.

What two questions can you ask to find out if a food is a real food?

The first question would be “did your great-great-great grandmother use it?”, in other words, is it old?

The second question is “is this how the food was traditionally prepared and eaten?”

What does “industrialized foods” mean? Give an example of an industrialized food product.

“Industrialized animal farming is to make the animal bigger, fatter, faster, cheaper.” The goal is not to keep foods healthy anymore, it is for big food industries to make a profit. As we were reading through, it was shocking to read how much these food industries make, and would loose if we starting preparing foods the healthier, traditional way.

One example would be chickens. So many are crammed as tightly as possible into a huge building. One factory farm building can hold as many as 18-20 thousand chickens. They are only kept alive on antibiotics. They never in their entire life see sunlight.

We found this chapter very interesting. I learned a lot. Probably my favorite part was how nutritionists used to believe that the whites of eggs were wonderful, and the yolks shouldn’t be eaten, and now believe that the yolks of eggs are wonderful!

  1. Abbie says:

    Hi Naomi,
My name is Abbie and I am ten years old. My mom and sister and I are doing this study too. We don’t live on a farm, but I love the farm life! I enjoy baking bread, gathering our own eggs, drinking raw milk from our neighbors, and having our own beef from my grandfather. These things are so much better for you than the “big industry” foods at the grocery store…and a lot more fun too!

    • Naomi says:

Hi Abbie! Do you like the study? We’re going to do our second lesson tomorrow, I think. :D

I agree! Having animals can be so fun. ;) Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all the chores ’round here though. LOL :) That’s great that you can get beef from your grandfather! Does he raise the cows and everything?

  2. Abbie says:

Yes, I like the study. Sometimes it is hard to grasp some of the information. I think we are doing chapter 2 this afternoon. My grandfather and uncle have a beef cattle farm and they keep two of my mom’s cows there to breed for us.
Talk to you after chapter 2.

    Abbie
